Facebook has expanded access to its App Center to all users in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K., the company said Monday.
Facebook launched the App Center in the U.S. just over a month ago. Accessed through a menu link on the left-hand side of Facebook.com or via one of the main navigational bookmarks in Facebook mobile apps, the center allows users to search for apps that integrate with Facebook and delivers individualized recommendations. The recommendations depend on other apps a particular user interacts with, the apps his or her friends use and where he or she is located, based on IP (Internet protocol) address.
The company claims the center has driven “millions” of app installations. The center does not host apps, but sends users to the appropriate app store for their device.
Users in Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey will gain access to the App Center next, according to Facebook. On Monday the company launched a localization tool that allows developers to translate the names and descriptions of their apps into other languages.
Four out of five of Facebook’s 900 million monthly active users are outside the U.S. and Canada, and many of its most popular apps, including Spotify and Angry Birds Friends, come from developers outside the North American countries, the company said.
